About the Work
Alter Boy are an alt-synth six-piece whose members span the transgender, deaf, and hard-of-hearing communities — and their videos are built from that perspective outward. Act of God is the lead single from their debut EP of the same name, and the video is something to witness: Jack, a fat, gay, deaf man, alone against a black backdrop, signing the entire track at double speed with an intensity that stopped everyone in the room cold.
The story the video tells is one of marginal identity — the disorienting experience of existing between worlds, of asking yourself whether you're deaf enough, queer enough, connected enough. It's raw by necessity. An earlier underwater concept didn't come together, and with under two weeks until release, the team stripped everything back. What remained was pure: no set, no costume, no distance between the performer and the story. Alter Boy's message is clear — those disconnected from community or culture should never be erased or debated.
